Edital de Convocação de Propostas para Mineração de Dados do Projeto Genoma

FACEPE-FAPESP

CALL FOR PROPOSALS

THE SUGARCANE EST PROJECT (SUCEST)

The Sugarcane EST project is part of the ONSA network. ONSA is a network of research laboratories in the State of São Paulo funded by FAPESP to implement its Genome Program.

The Sugarcane EST Project (SUCEST) is pleased to invite the Brazilian scientific community to join the SUCEST consortium in the effort to sequence, annotate, and develop research on functional analysis and mapping of 50,000 sugarcane ESTs.

PROJECT ORGANIZATION (see http://sucest.lbi.dcc.unicamp.br/)

SUCEST is coordinated by a DNA Coordinator responsible for generating cDNA libraries, distributing clones, and coordinating the flow of information from the network laboratories to the Bio-informatics Center. The Bio-informatics Coordination has established computerized tools for the collection of data generated by the sequencing laboratories, analysis and annotation of the sequences and created a Sugarcane Genome Database. Sequencing and annotation are presently being conducted by 21 laboratories equipped with ABI 377, 96 lanes automated sequencers and 12 Data Mining Laboratories acssesing the SUCEST database and continuously genes related to a series of themes (see http://sucest.lbi.dcc.unicamp.br/). Data Mining groups use tools developed by the bio-informatics lab to search the Sugarcane Genome Database for genes related to sugar metabolism, transcription factors, pathogen resistance, environmental stress, cell cycle, cell signaling, etc. The information collected by t! he Data Mining Groups is being continuously deposited at the bio-informatics Lab and are available to all SUCEST groups. SUCEST has an International Cooperation Coordinator who is establishing cooperation with international institutions in order to facilitate interaction with other Plant Genome Projects and groups, organizations and industry interested in SUCEST. SUCEST will soon have a Storage and Distribution Laboratory that will store and distribute all sequenced sugarcane ESTs. SUCEST is overseen by a Steering Committee (SC) composed by Dr. Jean Chritophe Glazsman from CIRAD, France and Dr Andrew Paterson of the University of Georgia, USA.<

CALL FOR PROPOSALS

SUCEST will receive proposals on two topics:

1. Data mining.

2. Pos-docs to work on mapping and comparative genomics.

Data Mining Laboratories should continuously identify and annotate from the SUCEST database proteins related to one or more of the following themes:

· Amino Acid metabolism

· Carbohydrate metabolism

· Lipid metabolism

· Energy metabolism

· Metabolism of co-factors, vitamins and other substances

· Nutrient uptake and metabolism

· Environmental stress

· Pathogenesis

· Membrane receptors

· Fitohormone biosynthesis and regulation

· Plant morphology

· Patterns and levels of gene variation

· Comparative genomics

· Other themes in basic and/or applied research are welcome.

· Do not hesitate in sending your proposal. Researchers of other areas such as physics, mathematics, food technology, chemistry among others are highly encouraged to submit proposals.

For researchers from São Paulo State, FAPESP will be granted R$ 7,000.00 for computational equipments and given free access to the complete SUCEST database. Additionally, fellowships of any category may also be granted, if adequately justified. SUCEST encourages scientist to incorporate undergraduate and graduate students in their data mining projects.

Researchers from outside São Paulo State, interested in the SUCEST consortium, should contact their local FAP for funding. The local FAP should contact FAPESP in order to establish a formal working agreement. All members should agree with the rules established by FAPESP. At present, FAPESP has established formal working agreements with FACEPE (Pernambuco) and FAPEAL (Alagoas).

Post-Docs for comparative genomics and mapping. FAPESP wishes to identify highly motivated young scientists to develop a comparative genomics project. The project involves the use bioinformatic and of molecular tools to compare sugarcane, maize and sorghum genomes with the objective of comparatively studying these and other gramineae genomes.

Only electronic aplications will be accepted. See the forms at http://watson.fapesp.br/cana/forms.htm. A short CV includin
